Are pilgrims puritans or separatists?
Puritan = a member of the Church of England who wanted to “purify” some of the things it did. Vocabulary: Are pilgrims puritans or separatists? Separatist = Puritans who gave up on “purifying” the Church and decided to break away from it entirely

The Pilgrims rejected the Church of England and refused to follow it’s traditions.
They fled to Holland seeking religious freedom

In 1620 The Virginia Company gave the Pilgrims a charter to settle in Jamestown.
There were some problems so they came on the Mayflower. Bad weather forced the Pilgrims to land far north – in a place that becomes Plymouth, MA.

The Pilgrims landed in a territory that was not administered by any country or government. They were far north of Virginia – the Virginia Company’s power did not extend that far What are the laws in a land where there is no government?

Mayflower Compact 1620 In order to maintain order, the men agreed upon laws for the good of the colony Mayflower Compact helped establish the idea of self government and majority rule.

1.) Why would the Mayflower voyagers consider this colony as an “advancement of the Christian Faith”? 2.) What do the colonists aboard the Mayflower agree to combine themselves into? What does this mean? 3.) When and where was this document signed? 4.) Where were they going? Where were they coming from? 5.) Both men and women were aboard the Mayflower. But, look at the signatures at the bottom. What do you think is odd about this? Why do you think this was?
