Large SA:Vol – increase rate of exchange Very thin – diffusion distance is short Partially permeable – allows selected materials to cross unobstructed Movement of environmental medium (air/water) – maintains diffusion gradient Movement of internal medium (blood) – to maintain diffusion gradient
