ISM Test Development Task Force Report June 21, 2004

Overview of status of Test Development Initial phase of matrix testing complete. Initial phase of matrix testing complete. Additional data generated on two tests run to 300 hours. Additional data generated on two tests run to 300 hours. Statistical data review of the initial phase of matrix is complete. Statistical data review of the initial phase of matrix is complete. Test shows discrimination on CHWL, but other parameters unclear. Test shows discrimination on CHWL, but other parameters unclear.

Some of the Data so far… CHWL (mg) has shown discrimination at 200 hrs and 5.5% soot CHWL (mg) has shown discrimination at 200 hrs and 5.5% soot Precision is good, but the spread between oils remains a concern to some. Precision is good, but the spread between oils remains a concern to some.

Some of the Data so far… OFDP (kPa) data is unclear. OFDP (kPa) data is unclear. There is some level of separation, but repeatability is of concern. There is some level of separation, but repeatability is of concern.

Some of the Data so far… Sludge (merit rating) data is also unclear. Sludge (merit rating) data is also unclear. There seems to be a lab influence and it has also been noted that not much separation between 1004 and ISMA is expected. 6 Some of the Data so far… Injector screw wt. loss (mg) data is also unclear. Injector screw wt. loss (mg) data is also unclear. There was scuffing observed on many of the parts even on some of the low wear parts. There was scuffing observed on many of the parts even on some of the low wear parts.

Some of the Data so far… (300 hr. data) CHWL maintains discrimination at 300 hrs and increases spread, but variability goes up as well. CHWL maintains discrimination at 300 hrs and increases spread, but variability goes up as well.

Next Steps for ISM Development Cummins has expressed a desire to move toward a higher level of soot in the ISM test (6.0 min) Cummins has expressed a desire to move toward a higher level of soot in the ISM test (6.0 min) This will require a modification to the original matrix design. Additional tests that will help develop a soot correlation from 5.5% to 6.5% are now being built into a revised matrix plan. This will require a modification to the original matrix design. Additional tests that will help develop a soot correlation from 5.5% to 6.5% are now being built into a revised matrix plan. Next phase of testing to begin once new matrix if finalized an approved. 16 Next Steps for ISM Development Questions remain about the ability of the ISM to be a full replacement test for the M11-EGR and M11 HST. Pending the outcome of phase 2 of the test matrix, there are two paths forward. Questions remain about the ability of the ISM to be a full replacement test for the M11-EGR and M11 HST. Pending the outcome of phase 2 of the test matrix, there are two paths forward. Path 1 – data shows appropriate discrimination and correlation such that the ISM is a suitable replacement for the M11-EGR/HST Path 1 – data shows appropriate discrimination and correlation such that the ISM is a suitable replacement for the M11-EGR/HST Path 2 – Continue to use M11EGR for current category and use ISM for PC10. Path 2 – Continue to use M11EGR for current category and use ISM for PC10.

Final Items of Note The ISM Test Development Task Force plans to make the decision to proceed with the phase 2 matrix testing, once the S.P. has agreed to the plan. The ISM Test Development Task Force plans to make the decision to proceed with the phase 2 matrix testing, once the S.P. has agreed to the plan. The ISM Test Development Task Force will keep the Cummins Surveillance Panel informed of our activities and meetings.
