VOLCANOES: TERROR FROM BELOW!!!
2
VOLCANOES AN UNCERTAIN THREAT
3
VOLCANOES THE RAGING PLANET!!!
4
3 types of volcanoes Each have very distinct shapes and features.
5
Mount Cleveland (Alaska)A stratovolcano, also known as a composite volcano. Steep profile and periodic explosive eruptions and effusive eruptions. Common at subduction zones.
6
Mount Garibaldipotentially active stratovolcano in Squamish BC.
7
Mount Garibaldi from the North or back side. Shape and size of volcano prior to eruption and erosion
8
Mauna Loa An active shield volcano, it is the largest mountain on earth. Lava eruptions from Mauna Loa are silica-poor, and very fluid; eruptions tend to be non-explosive and the volcano has relatively shallow slopes.
9
Fernandina, Galápagos Islands, Ecuador
10
Kohala Mountain, Hawaii
11
Nyamuragira Volcano Ascoria or Cinder Cone in the Virunga Mountains of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Africa's most active volcano. The most common and smallest type of volcano. Heights are generally less than 300 meters. They can occur as discrete volcanoes on basaltic lava fields, or as parasitic cones on the side of both shield volcanoes and stratovolcanoes. (Think of cinder cones as volcano zits)
12
Cinder cone in Lassen Volcanic National Park
13
Differences in Formation and Structure between shield, composite and cinder cone volcanos
14
Low Silica = thin lava
15
High silica content = thick gassy lava and explosions Can occur near both composite and shield volcanos
