WWI has ended. Factories started producing more to satisfy growing consumer demands. There was a great desire of NORMALCY. Americans wanted to enjoy their families and communities, removing themselves from the problems overseas.

Driving factory production was the assembly line. Introduced in 1913 by Henry Ford, the assembly line helped produce the “Model T”. Ford’s 1 st Goal was to create a process that would be efficient so that the product would be come affordable to more consumers. Improving efficiency meant a cheaper product because more could be produced for less.

Before 20 th Century, products were created from start to finish by one or few people. Great deal of skill was needed to build say a clock or put together one of industry’s many machines. Mass production changed the game!! Assembly line workers trained in one specific task, that would become like rhythm or timing.

For example, one completed car took many line workers. Once a 12 ½ hour job. Now took 93 minutes to complete. Mass production created the need for hierarchy in the workplace ( supervisors & mangers).

Finally, mass production of products required innovation, including: Technology Accountants to manage finances Sales Representatives to market the product Specialists in the design & manufacture of particular products.

The success of mass production did not hinge on just capabilities of one or a few, but on people working as a TEAM. Ford’s experiment was a huge success!! By 1924, Model T sold under $300, which made it more affordable for people making $1,300 a month. Wages for American factory workers gave them buying power. Ford lead the way paying $5 per day.

Auto industry lead to growth in other economic sectors. Businesses & Roads sprung up. Rubber steel, glass, oil, and other industries grew to meet the needs of consumers. Labor saving devices run by electricity Washing machines Stoves Vacuum Cleaners All of these allowed more time for recreational activities.

The resulting economic boom, or growth period, became know as the ROARING TWENTIES.

The temperance movement, lead by Progressives, pushed to make alcohol illegal. In 1919, the 18 th Amendment was ratified by the states. Followed by the National Prohibition Act (the Volstead Act), which provided for enforcement of the amendment. It was called Prohibition because it prohibited the manufacture, sale, and distribution of alcohol.

But for some odd reason it was legal to consume alcohol. Alcohol was still available through secret bars and club know as speakeasies, and criminal manufacturers and sellers known as bootleggers. Bootleggers were often linked to crime organizations, such as the Mafia, which rose in power in cities like Chicago and New York during the 1920’s.

Comstock laws made it illegal to send lewd materials through mail. Early 1900’s, birth control was considered lewd and illegal. Margaret Sanger who felt that unplanned pregnancies a shackle to women, was a pioneer in American birth control movement. Arrested in 1917 when she opened up a birth control clinic. Sanger dedicated the rest of her life to the movement and wrote books, organized conferences, and opened other clinics.

New, energetic music “jazz” reflected the restless sprit of the 1920’s. New technology of phonograph records and radios spread it throughout the country. Jazz grew from its roots in music made on plantations in the South. Developed further among musicians in New Orleans during the second decade of the 20 th century.

1921, writer Langston Hughes arrived in mostly African American neighborhood of New York City called Harlem. Hughes was on of several African American writers whose literary work flourished during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920’s. Collectively it celebrated African American music, poetry, prose, theater, and art.

Jazz brought fame to such artists and band leader and composer, Duke Ellington, and Louis Armstrong, whose trumpet could be head at jazz clubs in Chicago & New York. Dizzy Gillespie once said, “Louis Armstrong station in the history of jazz is unimpeachable. If it weren’t for him, there would be any of us.”

New types of dances, like the Charleston and the Lindy Hop were the rage among the city youth. Flappers, free-spirited women newly liberated in part because of their work experience during WWI, wore shorter skirts, short bobbed hair, and heavy makeup. The sound of pounding pianos gave rise to a new type of music called Tin Pin Alley after its beginning on 28 th Street in New York City. The period came alive with music and change.

1920’s saw the growth of Hollywood as well. First movies featured subtitles and an in-house organist to heighten the drama on the big screen, it wasn’t to long before the “talkies” became popular. Soon, Americans were captivated by Hollywood stars, such as: Douglas Fairbanks Charlie Chaplin Gloria Swanson

In 1927, first full-length feature motion picture with sound, “The Jazz Singer” staring Al Jolnson, debuted. The popularity of the motion pictures became a significant part of the Jazz Age. Movie brought sights & sounds of jazz to a wider audience. Composer/lyricists, Irving Berlin & Harry Warren, bridged musical genres, from jazz to Broadway musicals. Their music would become part of the world of motion pictures.
