Chapter 20 By: Lia Raves

Symbolism “Wh– oh yes, you mean why do I pretend? Well, its very simple,” he said. “Some folks don’t—like the way I live. Now I could say the hell with ‘em, I don't care if they done like it. I do say I don’t care if they don’t like it, right enough-- but I don’t say the hell with ‘em see.” Raymond pretending to be an alcoholic is his own decision, and him actually only drinking Coke is his replacement of alcohol. The coke is a symbol of him drinking in others minds.

Imagery Raymond drinking out of a sack, portraying it as alcohol when really its just coke. Raymond thinks its easier if he let other people do the assuming and to just let them think what they want about him. It shows how judgmental people can be and how fast they can judge.

Setting “We followed his finger with sinking hearts. Calpurnia was making her way up the middle aisle, walking straight toward Atticus.” The sinking hearts, and the expressionless faces create a mournful and discouraged mood. It shows its not one of those upbeat happy tones by the way of peoples body language.

Foreshadowing “But there is one way in this country in which all men are created equal – there is one human institution that makes a pauper the equal of Rockefeller, the stupid man the equal of Einstein, and the ignorant man the equal of any college president.” This creates the sense that even though everybody knows who the guilty person actually is, racism and close mindedness will always over rule the actual truth over the majority of people.

Theme “…the assumption – the evil assumption – the all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women, an assumption one associates with minds of their caliber.” When you are racist you usually don’t know right from wrong, and are close minded against anybody that doesn’t match your standards.

Characterization “She did something every child has done– she tried to put the evidence of her offense away from her.” This statement shows the kind of person Mayella is by her actions. It shows her immaturity and her ability to not own up to her mistakes.
