Physical Science Unit 1 Chapter 3 Lesson 1
2
Properties of Matter Matter- Anything that has mass and takes up space Everything on God’s Earth is made of matter
3
Properties of matter Characteristics of matter are called properties
4
Physical Properties Defined: Characteristics of a substance that can be observed without changing the basic nature of the substance Examples: Color, Odor, Shape, Mass, Volume, Weight
5
Physical Characteristics Physical characteristics can be broken down into two categories 1. Noncharacteristic Properties 2. Characteristic Properties
6
Noncharacteristic Properties Defined: Characteristics that can’t be used to identify substances Examples: Mass, shape, volume, length
7
Mass Defined: The amount of matter in an object Dependent upon the number of atoms or molecules in an object
8
Weight The amount of gravity exerted on an object Gravity- The force that pulls two objects together because of their masses
9
Weight-Mass 1. Is your mass the same on the moon? 2. Is your weight the same on the moon?
10
Volume Defined: The amount of space an object takes up Is identified in cubic meters and liters
11
Characteristic Properties Properties that are unique to a particular substance and can be used to identify that substance Examples: Density, melting point, boiling point
12
Density Defined: The mass per unit of volume of a substance D=m/V (density=Mass/Volume) Density is expressed in cubic grams units
