3. What does the government do and how do YOU matter in the United States Government???

4. Democratic governments perform necessary functions so citizens can live together peacefully. *** Basically governments keep the peace!!

5. Civics – is the study of rights and duties of citizens. *** Basically this means that civics explains to every person what they can and cannot do within their country.

6.  Citizens – have rights and responsibilities. Citizens agree to accept the governments authority -In Ancient Greece and Rome only men with property could be citizens.  Today most people are citizens of the country they live in.

8.  Government- is the ruling authority for a community.

9. - Keep order and provide security. - Make laws and settle conflicts. - Set up armed forces and agencies to defend citizens and their land from enemies. - Give to the needy. - Set up public policy- a course of government actions to achieve community goals. - Create a budget- a plan for collecting and spending money, as a part of policy decisions. - Develop relations with the community’s neighbors and other outsiders for the benefit of gaining an alli.

10.  First and highest-National Government: make laws for the entire country.  Second- State Government: make laws for people of their state.  Third- Local government: make laws for their town, city or county. ** State and local govt. cannot make laws that go against the national govt.

11.  Dictatorship- is a government controlled by one person or a small group. King Abdullah, Saudi Arabia. Age 82. In power since 1995. Last year’s rank: 5 Although Abdullah did not become king until 2005, he has ruled Saudi Arabia since his half-brother, Fahd, suffered a stroke 10 years earlier. In Saudi Arabia, phone calls are recorded and mobile phones with cameras are banned. It is illegal for public employees “to engage in dialogue with local and foreign media.” By law, all Saudi citizens must be Muslims. According to Amnesty International, police in Saudi Arabia routinely use torture to extract “confessions.” Saudi women may not appear in public with a man who isn’t a relative, must cover their bodies and faces in public and may not drive. The strict suppression of women is not voluntary, and Saudi women who would like to live a freer life are not allowed to do so.

13.  Democracy- The United States is this type of government; in which the people rule. - In a Democratic Govt. all citizens share in the government.

14. - Open elections; one person = one vote. -Candidates express views freely. -Legal requirements for voting are kept to a minimum. -Majority rule- citizens agree that when differences of opinion rise we will abide by what most people want.

15.  1: Rule of Law- All people are bound by the law.  2: Limited Government- Government may do what people give it the power to do.  3: Consent of the Governed- Citizens are the source of government power.  4: Democracy: the people rule.  5: Representative Government- People elect their leaders.

16. Parthenon  Democracy began in Ancient Greece. Athens had a direct democracy- in which ALL citizens met to debate govt. matters and vote.
