2  Era of Good Feelings – time after the War of 1812 in which political differences faded away. James Monroe – Republican president  Toured the nation early in Presidency  Won re-election by all but one electoral vote in 1820 Federalists weakened and slowly disappeared

3  Sectionalism - loyalty to one’s region Slavery, State’s Rights Internal Improvements – federal, state, and privately funded projects to help the nation’s transportation system  John C. Calhoun – planter from South Carolina Became a supporter of State Sovereignty – idea that states have autonomous power Against high tariffs  Daniel Webster – from New Hampshire and Massachusetts (argued for tariffs)  Henry Clay – Speaker of the House from Kentucky Known as a peacemaker through compromise  The Missouri Compromise – North wanted new state to be free, and the South wanted it to be a slave state Missouri would be a slave state, Maine would be a free state, and all remaining states above the 39 30’N parallel would be free

4  The American System – protective tariff, internal improvement program, and a national bank (Henry Clay) Clay hoped this would unite America  McCulloch v. Maryland Maryland taxed the Second Bank of the US, and it went to the Supreme Court John Marshall – ruled that Maryland could not tax a federal institution  Gibbons v. Ogden States cannot enact laws that interfere with the Constitutional power over interstate commerce

5  Rush – Bagot Treaty - treaty with Britain after War of 1812 Disarmament – the removal of weapons Convention of 1818 – set the boundary between US and Canada at the 49 th parallel  Demilitarized - border without armed forces  Andrew Jackson – American General invaded areas of Spanish Florida Luis de Onis – Spanish minister to the US Court-Martialed – tried in military court Adams-Onis Treaty – John Quincy Adams negotiated the surrender of Florida to the US, the US gave up Texas and money for damages, and Spain gave US a portion of the Pacific Northwest

6  Miguel Hidalgo – revolutionary who fought for change in the Spanish controlled Mexico Spanish troops conquered and executed Hidalgo, but Mexico gained independence in 1821  Simon Bolivar – “The Liberator” Led a movement in Venezuela, Columbia, Panama, and Ecuador  Jose de San Martin – achieved independence for Chile and Peru  Brazil gained independence from Portugal
