1 GENETICS VOCABULARY REVIEW Please take out your agenda, science journal, and turn in any missing work into the late basket.

2 DEFINITIONS TO REVIEW Phenotype - An organism’s physical appearance or visible traits. What can be seen. (ex: freckles, curly hair) Genotype - An organisms genetic makeup or allele combination. What can not be seen. (ex: AA, Aa, aa) Allele – 2 forms of a gene, 1 from each parent. (ex: AA, Aa, aa) Allele = Alphabet

3 YEAH, MORE DEFINITIONS TO REVIEW Heterozygous - having two different alleles for a particular trait, one dominant and one recessive. (Aa) Homozygous – having the same 2 alleles for a particular trait, both dominant or both recessive. (AA or aa)

4 YEAH, EVEN MORE DEFINITIONS TO REVIEW Dominant Trait – a trait that is expressed or shown. The alleles that determine dominant traits are either heterozygous (one dominant allele and one recessive allele = Aa) or homozygous dominant (both dominant alleles = AA). Recessive Trait – a trait that is in our genes but is not expressed or shown. It can be passed on to future generations. The alleles that determine recessive traits are always homozygous recessive (both recessive alleles = aa).
