Canada surrenders to the British in 1763: Treaty of Paris Quebec came under Military rule Canadians were treated well. Governor Carleton got along with Canadian people French fur merchants left France replaced by Americans and Scottish “Montrealers”

The province's territory was expanded to take over part of the First Nations Reserve It guaranteed free practice of the Catholic faith. It restored the use of the French civil law for private matters while maintaining the use of the English common law for public administration, including criminal prosecution.

Americans outraged: Why? 1. provisions were seen as a new model for British colonial administration 2. promote the Roman Catholic faith in preference to widely-held Protestant beliefs 3. limited opportunities for colonies to expand on their western frontiers by expanding Quebec’s boundaries
