Ideas competition Artistic interventions Place Jean Rey EQuAMA awards 2014
2
Context Place Jean Rey has a central location in the European quarter, situated between the European Parliamant, the European Commission and the seat of the European Council. In a monofunctional business quarter dominated by offices, several housing projects are being developed along the central axe of the Etterbeeksesteenweg connecting the residential squares in the North up to Jourdan and Flagey in the South. Place Jean Rey could become an important public space on that axe with emerging houses projects, commerces and collectieve services. A meeting place for inhabitants, but also a place where Eurocrats and Brussels’ citizens can meet, a place where animations and events are organised, etc. The artistic expresssion can be a major leverage to transform the square into a stimulating place …

Project call You are asked to generate ideas for an artistic interventions for Place Jean Rey in the heart of the European Quarter in Brussels. Project ideas must be creative, intelligent, original, participatory, and dynamic, making Place Jean Rey alive and attract more users. The propositions can be multiple: sculptures, performance art and spectacles, installations, fountains, posters, projections, photos up to architecture. In brief, there is no definite goal to the projects other than to transform Place Jean Rey into an experimental platform by means of a artistic intervention that stimulates interaction with the user and at the same time reflects upon the context of the square. It is important to come up with concrete ideas as input for the debate. These ideas will be used to sound public opinion, but also to raise the awareness of the authorities with inspiring and achievable ideas. Based on the feasibility, the proposals will of course be programmed in the public space itself.
