Stoichiometry Or: a fancy way to say how much!
2
It is a very mathematical part of chemistry, so be prepared for lots of calculator use
3
So what does that mean?? It means that if you want to make anything, You have to follow the recipe. When you follow a recipe, You often have some things left over.
4
For example:
5
Stoichiometry To make a BLT, you need: 1 lettuce leaf 3 tomato slices 2 slices of bread 3 bacon slices OR L + 3T + 3Ba + 2Br BLT
6
More Examples If you have 2 lettuce, 6 tomato, 7 bacon and 4 bread, how many BLT’s can you make? 2 sandwiches What do you call the items you run out of?? Limiting reagents What do you call the leftovers?? Excess Reagents
7
This is True for Chemical Reactions 2H 2 + O 2 2H 2 O Subscripts tell you the amount of atoms/particles in the chemical compound. Coeffiecents tell you the amount of the chemical.
8
What is the amount used in Chem?? Moles !! Yes 6.02 x 10 23 particles/mol 2H 2 + O 2 2H 2 O For every 1 mole of O 2 used there are 2 moles of H 2 used.
9
2H 2 + O 2 2H 2 O If you have 2 moles of H 2 and 1 mole of O 2, how much H 2 O may be formed? Answer: 2 moles If you have 5 moles of H 2 and 2.5 moles of O 2 ?? Answer: 5 moles If you have 10 moles of H 2 and 5 moles of O 2 ? Answer: 10 moles
10
But if your question is in grams? IF you have 2 grams of H 2 and 16 grams of O 2, how many moles of water can you make? Answer: One mole How many grams is that? Answer: 18 grams
