Mercantilism Economic policy of the British – Export more than they import Export=sell, import=buy Sell more to the colonies than they buy! – Colonists sell raw materials to England, and then buy back the “finished” products England makes a profit selling back the products – Ultimately helps the British and hurts the colonists – Navigation Acts were part of this policy

Salutatory Neglect Salutatory= beneficial British somewhat ignored the colonists allowing them to develop their own self governments and did not enforce all of their laws Colonists still viewed themselves as British Left alone for 100s of years- England wouldn’t enforce the laws as long as they continued getting the raw materials and money

French & Indian War Tensions in Europe and North America high between the English, French, and Spanish Fighting breaks out near the Ohio River in 1754- sparks a war across two continents – Both British and French claimed this area – 1754 George Washington attacks the French for the area and is defeated At the same time European countries were fighting for land & to be the most powerful in Europe—called the Seven Years War

French & Indian War – Fighting continued in America- called the French and Indian War – American Colonists and British vs. the Native Americans and French Native Americans were frustrated by the English taking their land Fighting continues, English had many early defeats as the French used Guerilla Warfare of the Indians By 1759 the British beat the French and Indians, establishing England as the dominant world power

The British spend a lot of money to win the war. To repay the money, parliament taxed the colonists heavily – Becomes a cause of the American Revolution

Proclamation of 1763 After the war, colonists began to try to move west, now that the French were gone Indian attacks continued England did not have the resources to protect the colonists, so they forbade the colonists from going past the Appalachian Mountains – How do you think the colonists felt about this new law?? Why?
