1 SAM for SQL Workloads Presenter Name

2 SAM supports your datacenter strategy
The datacenter is the hub of everything you offer your business. You need to be able to take everything you know and own today and transform those resources into a datacenter that is capable of handling changing needs and unexpected opportunities. With software asset management, or SAM, you can gain the insights into your SQL environment you need to help you transform your datacenter while reducing cost, complexity, and non-compliance risks.

3 SQL Server evolution 2014 Delivering mission-critical performance across all workloads with faster insights from any data and a platform for hybrid cloud. In-memory across workloads Performance & scale Hybrid cloud Optimized HDinsight Cloud BI A new standard for missions critical databases and end-to-end business intelligence with cloud-ready technologies and solutions. Comprehensive, integrated data management and business intelligence with award-winning analytics. 5 SQL Server licensing evolution
Beginning with SQL Server 2012, release options were simplified with three main editions. With the release of SQL Server 2012, the Per Processor licensing model was phased out, and a Per Core licensing model introduced. Both SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition and Standard Edition can be licensed using the Per Core model. SQL Server 2014 follows the same model. SQL Server Licensing Options SQL Server 2012 offers two licensing options–one based on computing power, and one based on users or devices. Enterprise Edition Core-Based License

6 SQL Workload Challenges
Modern SQL environments can be very complex: It can be difficult to have a clear picture of what’s being used and what is licensed. Unplanned instances can easily arise because of the ease with which new instances can be added. Licensing implications are often not considered when adding SQL – internal pressure to add power or resolve issues quickly may motivate IT to add SQL without regard for the licensing impact. The licensing model for SQL Server changed with SQL Server 2012, which can impact customers on older versions. Governance issues at customers often exists, with management not always aware of or in synch with what IT is doing.

7 to best meet future needs
Align SQL Workloads to best meet future needs To manage for the future, it’s important to first know where you are. Use SAM to help identify SQL workloads, based on footprint data. Sample workloads include: OLTP – Transactional workloads Packaged business applications Custom application development Deploying external Web sites Deploying internal Web sites / Intranets / Content management Business Intelligence (BI) and Data Warehousing Corporate business intelligence Self-service BI Advanced Analytics, Data Mining, OLAP cubes Enterprise data warehouse and Data Marts IT Development or test Internal IT productivity tools Connecting applications

8 SQL Workload Opportunities
Implementing Software Asset Management (SAM) best practices for SQL Workloads can help an organization: Identify underutilized SQL Servers. Optimize workloads to avoid unnecessary costs. Gain clarity about their IT environment. Align IT, procurement, management, and other activities around organizational goals. Create the necessary processes for improved governance. Reduce risks associated with non-compliance. Develop a solid foundation for future evolution of the IT environment, based upon a clear understanding of the existing infrastructure.

9 What is Software Asset Management (SAM)?
SAM is a global industry standard ISO/IEC Endorsed by Microsoft and many others ITIL best practice guide on SAM “All of the infrastructure and processes necessary for the effective management, control and protection of the software assets within an organization, throughout all stages of their lifecycle.” SAM is an integral part of the control framework of any well-run organization Following SAM best practices results in better information for decision making and a higher degree of operational excellence; ultimately driving long-term business value.

10 SQL Workloads SAM Engagement
Get the most from your investment in SQL Save money and gain efficiencies Optimize licensing Manage risk A customer focused SAM engagement will help you:

11 SQL Workloads Engagement: Step 1
After establishing an organization’s goals and objectives, the first step is to complete a software review… Inventory deployed software Match installations with licenses Microsoft SQL Server ...build a detailed report on your current state

12 SQL Workloads Engagement: Step 2
Compare your current environment with your organization’s future goals and objectives Review deployment considerations Consider licensing implications Is it time to move to Azure? How does Virtualization impact licensing? What is the best model: via computing power or user/devices? Are development and production environments isolated? Where are there consolidation opportunities? What are relevant Software Assurance benefits? Use the new insight to help decide right path for the future

13 Use SAM to help optimize SQL Workloads
Adopt best practices to optimize SQL workloads: Limit the number of CPUs and cores for increased cost savings. Consolidate workload instances and databases onto fewer servers to reduce licensing costs. Isolate production vs. development environments. Consider moving to dedicated Host Clusters licensed via Enterprise for unlimited virtualization. Strengthen policies, increase standardization and gain insight into company assets while improving internal licensing communication. Establish a solid foundation for achieving future organizational objectives based upon a clear understanding of your SQL environment.

14 The Path Forward Project scoping & technical meeting Inventory
Now Assess How well are SQL workloads managed today? Future goals Current state Deployment Licensing Policies Discuss program & next steps Organizational Objectives Understand the organization’s culture, and business goals and objectives they hope to achieve Inventory Collect data on software deployments and gather additional information on the IT environment Review & Validate Compare reports with current license entitlements and make final adjustments Discover Plan Project scoping & technical meeting Where do improvement opportunities exist? Review Are there any licensing issues to discuss?
