Reader Response Reader response is how the READER responds to what they are reading. Responses may be different based on different background, history, knowledge, or experience. Everyone responds to things differently, especially in reading.

What is a Dialectical Journal? A dialectical journal is another name for a double-entry journal or a reader-response journal. A dialectical journal is a journal that records a dialogue, or conversation between the ideas in the text (the words that you are reading) and the ideas of the reader (the person who is doing the reading).

The Dentist We are going to read a chapter from The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien. When we are done, you will highlight/underline/circle 3-5 things that stuck out to you in the story and explain why you chose them. Respond: Why did you pick out the quote? How did you react to the quote? Analyze: What is your interpretation of the quote? What does this quote show? Evaluate: What might be the author’s intention of this quote? What might the author be trying to show us, the readers? What does this quote do for the story?

The Things They Carried By: Tim O’Brien Read and annotate the chapters “Enemies” and “Friends” (a minimum of 5 annotations each). Create a minimum of 2 Dialectical Journal entries. Each entry should be at least 2 paragraphs. Remember, each entry should have the quote you chose, the chapter used, and a reader’s response to the quote chosen ( hint: explain why you chose the quote/how you feel about the quote, what the quote means/shows, and how it is important to the chapter ).

Closing Summarize the two chapters read in class today: 1.Enemies 2.Friends Turn In At The Tray: 1.Quickwrite/Closing 2.Dialectical Journal Entries (from today) 3.Annotated Chapters (from today) If you are still working on your journal entries or annotations, they must be turned in first thing when you enter class tomorrow.

13 August 2015 Sit with your team (on the board) Quickwrite: Write about something that you thought would never change, but did. Was it a change for the better? Or did it make you feel sad, angry, betrayed? Explain. Essential Questions: What is the EOC/Milestone test? What is the EOC/Milestone’s importance? What testing strategies may I employ to help improve my testing abilities?

What your teams needs… At least 2 smart phones that go to Kahoot.it When you get the code, log in on both phones and put what team number you are. When you put in the answer, you must put in the same answer for both phones. The reason for this is to make sure if one phone gets disconnected, you won’t be out of the game. The winning group will get to pick out a full size candy.

14 August 2015 Quickwrite: Do you believe poetry is a good way to keep people aware of social issues? Why or why not? Essential Questions: What is poetry? How is poetry used in society? Why might poetry be important in society? How does poetry reflect current events?

In Your Groups… You will receive a piece of a poem. When you receive this piece, you will restate what it says in your own words. Afterward, you will write the piece of the poem on a big strip of paper. Each group will put their strip of paper on the board. As a class, we will arrange the pieces in the way you believe they should be. Each group will then write on the board how they restated their lines.

Now… You’ve been given a figurative/poetry device chart. On that chart, you will fill out the “example from poem” columns (the right column). You will fill out examples for Rhyme, Metaphor, and Imagery. You will then create your own examples and put them under the left column “Example From Notes” for the same categories ( Rhyme, Metaphor, and Imagery ).
