British East India Company gained control of all Indian trade. June 23,1757 After the battle of Plassey, The British East India company took complete control over trading in India.

The British government establishes rule over India. August 2, 1858 Britain passed the India Act to give entire control of India to the British

Indian National Congress founded. December 31, 1885 The Indian National Congress played a major role in the fight for Independence for India.

Muslim League wants a separate Pakistani state. January 1, 1930 The Muslim league demanded that a separate state be created but got little support from the Indian National Congress.

Gandhi’s Salt marches. March 12, 1931 Gandhi led over 300 people on non- violent marches to extract salt from the sea. They were protesting salt taxes by the British.

Pakistan and India declare Independence. August 14, 1947 After the non-violence acts of Gandhi and others, India finally gained their independence in 1947.

First Battle over Kashmir. August 26,1947 Religion sparked conflict between India and Pakistan. They also fought over land, each thinking it belonged to them.

Gandhi Assassinated. January 30, 1948 Gandhi was shot by a Hindu radical who believed he was too sympathetic toward Muslims.

India becomes a Democracy. January 1, 1950 India became a Parliamentary Democracy in 1950.
