WHAT IS IDENTITY THEFT? Occurs when a person gathers personal information to assume the identity of another person for illicit reasons. Personal information may include: Social Security Number Credit Card Numbers Bank Account Numbers

HOW IS IT DONE? Identity thieves open new credit card accounts using your name, address, date of birth, and social security number. They charge up these accounts and the bill goes to the victim of the stolen identity.

WHAT IMPACT DOES IT HAVE? Victims must somehow prove their innocence. Victims become more in debt during an investigation. It jeopardizes the credit history of the victim.

5 WAYS TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM IDENTIY THEFT Buy a shredder and shred all important papers, especially pre-approved credit card applications Do not carry identifiers you don’t need, such as social security card, birth certificate, and passport.

5 WAYS TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM IDENTIY THEFT Avoid putting your credit card number on the Internet. If you do, be sure that it is a secure site. Monitor all of your bank and credit card statements each month. Get credit and/or debit cards with your picture on them.
