3. HOW IS IT DONE? Identity thieves open new credit card accounts using your name, address, date of birth, and social security number. They charge up these accounts and the bill goes to the victim of the stolen identity.

4. WHAT IMPACT DOES IT HAVE? Victims must somehow prove their innocence. Victims become more in debt during an investigation. It jeopardizes the credit history of the victim.

5. 5 WAYS TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM IDENTIY THEFT Buy a shredder and shred all important papers, especially pre-approved credit card applications Do not carry identifiers you don’t need, such as social security card, birth certificate, and passport.
