Overcoming Obstacles I won’t get the placement I want I might be unable to do the job It will be difficult to adjust to living elsewhere A 9-5 routine, monotony I will become “tea maker / photocopier” – lowest position I have to be punctual and get up early I might not enjoy it

Career Development Adviser / Information officer Identify your strengths and aims through taught sessions and presentations Work Experience Development Unit Resources to help you prepare for Work Based Learning Explore the full range of options for full-time, part-time, short-term, vacation and voluntary work Accreditation for the experience you gain Contact with opportunity providers for employment, training and study at home or abroad

What support does your Faculty or School offer YOU? In many cases Faculties and Schools offer: Placement administrator / Placement tutor giving assistance to find placement Placement preparation classes / employer presentations Online units and resources to help you prepare for and secure your work experience or placement First hand knowledge of your industry sector employers Support for on-placement supervision and assessment

What support does your employer offer YOU? In many cases you should approach your industrial supervisor or work colleagues in the first instance. Too much or not enough work? In both situations try to suggest solutions to your supervisor. You will impress people if you take the initiative to resolve issues rather than merely identifying problems. If this is not possible, ALWAYS talk to someone independent, such as a Placement Tutor, Career Development Adviser or friend.
