Order of Operations By Carl Stephen
2
Order of Operations Parentheses Exponents Square roots Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction
3
Order of Operations In doing the four basic operations, you follow three rules: Do what is in parentheses, if there are parentheses, exponents, and square roots. Do multiplication and division from left to right. Do addition and subtraction from left to right.
4
Examples 5(3+7)-137(9-5)+18/(7-4)7(2+7)-15 5(10)-137(4)+18/37(9)-15 50-13=3728+6=3463-15=48 8+2(9-2) 8+2(7) 8+14=22
5
Evaluating Mathematical Expressions with Letters Remember: To evaluate a mathematical expression you need to substitute a particular number for a letter and then do the order of operations.
6
Examples Evaluate when a=2Evaluate when a=3; b=5 2(a+7)+38b-(a+4) 2(2+7)+38*5-(3+4) 2*9+38*5-7 18+3=2140-7=33 Evaluate when a=4Evaluate when b=5 6a+54b-1 6*4+54*5-1 24+5=2920-1=19
