2 The Beginning Abraham Lincoln elected president
Southern states break away from Union Don’t want Lincoln as President Don’t want slavery messed with (Lincoln said he would contain slavery) Lincoln goes to war to keep Union together

4 A. What military traditions did each side have?
North: Strong Naval traditions (3/4’s of Navy in North) South: Strong military leadership (7 of the 8 military colleges in the South)

5 B. What economic advantages did the North have over the South?
Large population (larger in army) Produced 90% of manufactured goods (more iron = more weapons) More railroads (move troops/supplies faster) C. Which side was in a better financial position to pay for the war? North or South? North North: controlled nation’s treasury, trade tariffs, more people South: planters in debt, can’t buy bonds, can’t trade

6 D. Why did Britain and France want to recognize the Confederate States of America even though the US government was opposed to it? Britain and France wanted cotton from South

7 A. Why is the Civil War considered the first modern war?
Because of new technologies

8 B. What new technologies were used by the armies?
1. Gatling gun – type of machine gun 2. Cone-shaped bullet: faster, goes farther, more accurate

10 A. What advantages and disadvantages did each side have as the Civil War began?
North South Advantages -More people -Strong Navy -Production -Railroads -Military schools -Leadership Disadvantages -Only 1 school -British and France want cotton from South -less people -no money -less railroads
