Qualities of Elders Titus 1:6

[Children] Not accused of dissipation These 2 qualities (dissipation, insubordination) describe the children. Does it matter how the children act, whether still at home or grown and out of the home? Accused: KATEGORIA; IE – categorized as… – To bring an accusation against – A man should not serve as an elder if his children have accusations against them – Does it mean he can never serve?

[Children] Not accused of dissipation What should they not be accused of? – Dissipation – Insubordination – These are participles, having an “ing” ending. Cf Mt 9:35 Dissipation: asotias (a = not; sotias = salvation) – A riotous life; a child rejecting salvation and God’s plan for their life – 1 Pet 4:4 – Debauchery; profligacy; riot; rebelling

[Children] Not accused of dissipation Dissipation: How can children rebel which would cause a man not to become an elder? – Rebelling by getting drunk – Eph 5:18 – Rebelling by living the kind of lifestyle the prodigal son lived – Lk 15:13 – Aristotle defines asotia as “the ruination through the wasting of one’s goods.” Examples? Could include wasting money on drugs? Could include wasting time on ungodly things? Could include wasting energy on worldly things? Does the life of a child (at home or grown) reflect on parents?

[Children] Not accused of Insubordination Insubordination: anupotakta – Not made subject to – Independent – Undisciplined – Disobedient – Rebellion Since both words describe riot and rebellion, what’s the difference?

[Children] Not accused of Insubordination Insubordination: – Refusal to bow to parental authority – Undisciplined and rebellious – Just as all things were subjected to Christ (Heb 2:8), so the children are to be subjected to their parents - Rom 1:30; 2 Tim 3:2 – Like children who continuously get in trouble with the law – 1 Tim 1:9; – Also who are continuously rejecting God’s laws – Titus 1:10. Could this be a child who believes something false, not taught in God’s word?

Application: Children need to be taught to obey their parents, so they can learn to obey God. Cf Eph 6:1 Effective parenting and household management will help produce effective elders. For kids, knowing and doing are two different things. God wants us to know and do – Jm 4:17
