Types of City Government Mayor –Council Systems: mayor holds executive power & council holds legislative power –Mayor Powers: veto, appoint/ remove officials, create city budget –Council approval & advise –Ex: New Orleans/ Mandeville Commission= mayor holds executive power & commissioners hold legislative & executive power –Ex: New York City Council-Manager= mayor has weak executive power, council legislative power with manager with executive power. –Ex: San Francisco

Parish Government 64 parishes broken wards (parish districts) in which a representative is elected. Duties –Pass ordinances –Provide services –Maintain roads, bridges, jails, & courthouses –Raise money through property & sales tax

Parish Government Officials Parish President (Pat Brister) –Elected 4 year terms, unlimited terms –Duties: appoint officials, manages, submit policies –Parish Council elected officials that functions alongside of parish president, acting as legislative body.

Special forms of government Special Districts –Has departments that deal with specific functions –Collect taxes to pay for service –Elected positions –Not controlled by government –Ex: St. Tammany Parish School Board (Trey Folse).
