Traditional, or period, furniture styles were developed during different periods of history and are still being used today
Many traditional styles came from France, England, and the United States
Traditional furniture styles are often named after the rulers of the era or the actual craftsman.

Emphasis on line and form rather than ornamentation

Vasiform (vase shaped) splats (chair backs)
Carved shells and fans
Cushioned seats
Wing-back chairs.

Squared, more masculine design than Queen Anne
Emphasized ornamentation
Curved top rail with carved ears
Pierced vasiform splat
Cabriole legs with carved knees and ball and claw feet
Later designs have straight legs due to Chinese influence.

Influenced by the Bauhaus philosophy of “form follows function” (objects should be designed according to the function they have to perform)

He is known for his Prairie style of architecture that “fit” into the surroundings
He designed furniture to blend with each of his house designs
Commonly used horizontal lines, geometric shapes, flat surfaces, and slats.

Fallingwater House is located in southwest Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands 90 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh
The main house 5,330 square feet (2885 sq. ft. interior;  2445 sq. ft. terraces) constructed , followed by the guest house construction in 1939 (1,700 square feet)
Final cost:  $155,000 (Included $8,000 architect’s fees, and $4,500 for installed walnut furnishings) is the equivalent of approximately $2.4 million in 2009
Restoration in 2002 was reported at $11.4 million.
