2 2 Students watch videos etc. to understand material prior to class meeting Problem: May develop subtle misunderstandings Current approach: In-class discussions meant to help students overcome the misunderstandings... but effectiveness? Idea: Use an on-line tool involving specific activities to help Motivation CONSIDER (in CSE 3231)

3 3 Fact: People learn best when they discuss their ideas rather than hear a presentation Fact: The most effective discussions are those among peers, not between students and instructors! Fact: The most effective discussions are among peers who disagree with each other (about the topic!) Motivation (contd.) CONSIDER (in CSE 3231)

4 4 Phase 1: Individual students answer a conceptual multiple-choice question that also has an explanation component Phase 2: The app assigns students to anonymous groups of 4-5 students each ensuring that each group is made up of students with conflicting ideas CONSIDER... an app in which Conflicting Student Ideas are Explored & Resolved CONSIDER (in CSE 3231)

5 5 Phase 3: Students in each group discuss their positions, trying to persuade the others and pointing out conflicting and supporting relations between the different positions Phase 4: Individual students submit a final report consisting of: –a summary of their original answer –a summary of the group’s discussion –their final answer CONSIDER... contd. 6 6 Needed: Ten volunteers who are willing to try out a prototype next week. –must have an Android device –must have Gmail account –must be able and willing to stay for a short while after class on Monday/Tuesday next week –must be willing to use the system not only to answer the initial quiz but also participate in the group discussion and submit the final summary –must be willing to provide feedback about the system CONSIDER... the prototype CONSIDER (in CSE 3231)
