04:33 CKS3: Yr7 Chemistry Unit 1 – Me the Scientist! Lesson number: 8. Lesson Title: Acid and Metal Carbonate Reactions Learning OutcomesHow I didTargets Learning Outcome 1: Explain what happens during the reaction, using a word equation to state the products Level 5 Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate the concept of acid reactions with metal carbonates by making bath bombs Level 6 Learning Outcome 3: Write up a detailed account of both practical's including word equations and diagrams. Complete for homework Level 7 Connector: (Level 4) What happens when a metal reacts with an acid and what is the test for the reaction? TJ

BIG picture What skills will you be developing this lesson? HSW- by planning and carrying out an investigation/ Interpreting data/ evaluating an experiment Literacy- by writing explanations using correctly spelt keywords and good grammar. Team work- during a practical investigation Participation- during a practical activity Reflection- through self and peer assessment of each outcome Key Question: What is the difference between an element and a compound? Quick Discussion: What do you already know? How is this lesson relevant to every day life? Chemicals and reactions used to work machines for example, for fireworks Where does this lesson fit in to the rest of the topic? Lesson 2
3
Keywords: Create sentences using the keywords to show that you know what they mean. Put your hand up if there is any key word from the list that you don’t understand. Carbonates Metal Carbon Dioxide Salt Calcium carbonate Sodium carbonate Copper carbonate

5
When a metal carbonate reacts with an acid, the products are a salt, carbon dioxide and water: metal carbonate carbon dioxide water acid salt New Information for Task 1
6
Your task is going to be to carry out the reaction between acid and metal carbonate. You will also carry out a test for the reaction to show that it has taken place. Learning Activities for Outcome 1
7
What do you need to do to be safe when conducting this experiment? Learning Activities for Outcome 1
8
What equipment will you need? 3 test tubes Test tube rack Copper carbonate, Calcium carbonate, Sodium carbonate Spatula Pipette Hydrochloric acid One boiling tube with bung and delivery tube One test tube of limewater Learning Activities for Outcome 1
9
Metal CarbonateObservations (metal carbonate + acid) Observations (Limewater) Calcium carbonate Sodium carbonate Copper carbonate Draw the diagram of the experiment in your book Learning Activities for Outcome 1
10
New Information for Task 1b
11
Test for carbon dioxide? cloudymilky white When carbon dioxide gas is bubbled through limewater, it turns the limewater cloudy or milky white. Gas Limewater turns milky/cloudy Limewater New Information for Task 1b
12
When an acid is added to a carbonate what happens to the carbonate? What gas is produced? What happens to buildings which are made of carbonates? Learning Activities for Outcome 1b
13
Learning Outcome 1: Review Learning OutcomeHow I didTargets Learning Outcome 1: Explain what happens during the reaction, using a word equation to state the products Level 5 Met? Partly met? Not met? How can I improve on Learning Outcome 1? Go back to your Learning Outcome grid and fill out the ‘How I did’ and the ‘Targets’ column.

When you add a bath bomb to your bath it fizzes and releases lots of bubbles. New Information for Learning Outcome 2
17
The main ingredients in a bath bomb are citric acid and bicarbonate of soda. When these are added together in the presence of water, a chemical reaction takes place and a gas is made (that’s where the fizzing comes from) Colouring, fragrance and oil is also added. THINK! What gas do you think is made? New Information for Learning Outcome 2
18
Bicarbonate of soda’s other name is sodium bicarbonate. When acid is added to a carbonate this chemical reaction happens: Acid + Metal carbonate Metal salt + Water + Carbon dioxide New Information for Learning Outcome 2
19
1.Weigh out 15g of each of these : Citric acid, bicarbonate of soda and corn flour. 2.Mix these dry ingredients well. Get out any lumps. Put the mixture into a plastic beaker. 3.Measure out 9ml of sunflower oil in a measuring cylinder using a funnel to avoid spillage. 4.To the oil add 5 small drops of food colouring and enough fragranced oil to bring the total volume up to 10ml. 5.Mix the wet ingredients well to disperse the food colouring. 6.Add the wet to the dry ingredients a bit at a time, stirring well all the time. 7.When it has all been incorporated mould the mixture with your hands into a ball. You will have to squeeze pretty hard and it will make a mess! Do it over newspaper please. If the mixture does not hold together then return to the plastic beaker and stir in a little more sunflower oil and try again.
20
To present your bath bomb wrap it in tissue paper and tie with ribbon. Add a tag on which you can write a message or instructions on how to use it. Happy Fizzing!

Review for Remembering Stand up if you have met the lesson outcomes? If not what do you need to do next in order to meet the outcome? Record this in your diary as part of your homework. Is there any part of the lesson you think you need to go over again next lesson? Tell the person next to you three things you have learnt this lesson. How will you remember this for your exam?
