BIOS and the Power-on Self Test A computer can’t do much without instructions The first thing the CPU does when you switch it on is to search for the operating system This program immediately runs a series of system checks called the Power-On Self Test… When you switch the power on and boot up your computer the CPU checks the ROM chip where the basic input/output system (BIOS) program is stored.

BIOS POST (Power-on self test) is a series of system checks which the BIOS program runs when power is supplied to a computer. The purpose of the POST is to see that all the circuits are connected and to make sure the RAM chip, the drives and all the connected hardware are available.
