She triggered the Montgomery bus boycott, this ended segregation. She won the NAACP’S award. In 1983 she was inducted into the Michigan’s Women Hall of Fame. In 1999 she was presented with the Congressional Gold Medal.

She lost her mother at a young age. She had to quit school when her grandma became sick to take care of her. She was diagnosed with progressive dementia.
