1 STAINING R.SEENIAMMAL AEH, THENI

2 PURPOSE TO STAIN THE EPITHELIUM OF THE CORNEA TO SEE
FOR THE VIABILITY OF THE EPITHELIUM OR CONTINUITY OF EPITHELIUM

3 TYPES OF STAIN FLUORESCEIN
1MG FLUORESCEIN STRIPS AVAILABLE DETECTS DISCONTINUITY IN EPITHELIUM ULCER, ABRASION,SPKS+ STAINS FLUORESCEIN GREEN COLOUR ROSE BENGAL DETECTS NON- VIABLE OR DEAD EPITHELIAL CELLS. EG. DRY EYE, NECROSIS. STAINING RED SIDE EFFECT SEVERE IRRITATION SO ROSE BENGAL NOT USED

4 PROCEDURE TEAR AND OPEN THE STAIN STRIP.
DO NOT TOUCH THE STAINED PART OF STRIP. IF TOUCHED DISPOSE (1MG OF FLUORESCEIN) ADD 1DROP OF ARTIFICIAL TEARS TO THE STAINED STRIP & WAIT FOR FEW SECONDS. EXPLAIN THE PROCEDURE TO THE PATIENT THAT YOU ARE TESTING AND NOT TREATING. TELL THE PATIENT TO LOOK UP AND APPLY THE STAIN STRIP IN THE LOWER PALPEBIAL CONJUNCTIVA. EXAMINE THE CORNEA UNDER A COBALT BLUE FILTER IN SLIT LAMP . AREAS WHERE THE IS DISCONTINUTY OF EPITHELIUM IS STAINED FLUORESCEIN GREEN.

5 PRECAUTIONS SEE THE CORNEA BEFORE STAINING IN THE SLIT LAMP BIOMICROSCOPY TO GET AN IDEA WHERE TO LOOK AFTER STAINING . EXAMINE AC FOR CELLS/ FLARE BEFORE STAINING SINCE IT IS DIFFICULT TO SEE AFTER STAINING.

6 INDICATIONS ! 1. INJURY CASES – TO MAKE OUT EPITHELIAL DEFECT.
2. IN PENETRATING INJURY AFTER STAINING SEE WHETHER STAIN IS THERE OR WASHED AWAY TO SEE WHETHER IT IS FULL THICKNESS TEAR. SIEDELS TEST !!. ULCER CASES – NEW- REVIEW (TO SEE WHETHER HEALING. !!!. DRY EYE – FOR SPKS !V. FOR APPLANATION – PUT A DROP OF TOPICAL ANAESTHETIC 4% XYLOCAINE AND APPLY STAIN

7 JONES TEST TO TEST PATENCY OF LACRIMAL PASSAGE.
APPLY STAIN IN BOTH EYES AND TEST THE NASAL CAVITY WITH COTTON WIPER INTRODUCED INTO IT . IF FLUORESCEIN IS PRESENT IN COTTON WIPER WHILE REMOVING THE WIPER INDICATES LACRIMAL PASSAGE IS FREE.

8 THANK YOU
