Amanda Walicki: Costume Designer
Adaption of Trifles I am going to be taking on costume designer for Susan Glaspell’s play, Trifles. Amanda Walicki: Costume Designer

The Cast George Henderson- County Attorney Henry Peters- Sheriff
Lewis Hale- A neighboring farmer Mrs. Peters- Wife of Sheriff Mrs. Hale- Wife of the farmer John Wright- Deceased man Mrs. Wright- Accused murderess Each cast member has a different and unique style which I find very important to the overall look of the play. When the audience is introduced to each character they can see their personality through their clothes immediately. The men in this play are going to all being wearing a “uniform” so to say. The Attorney will be in very business attire, where as the Sheriff will be in uniform and the Farmer in his everyday clothes. John Wright will be in his house clothes, very relaxed. The women in the play are a totally different story from the men. Mrs. Peters will be looking very elegant and feminine, while Mrs. Hale will be in relaxed pants and a shirt. She is the famers wife after all, she likes the comfortable look. Mrs. Wright will be thought of to be in her housecoat. Also since this play takes place in the dead of winter, all of them will be wearing coats and other winter accessories.

County Attorney- George Henderson
George will be wearing a very nice black suit with a crisp, white shirt underneath. He will also be wearing a black tie. All of this will be under an long black dress coat and blue scarf. I want to put George Henderson into a sleek black suit, because he is young, and determined to get to the bottom of this case. The crisp, white shirt shows that he is new and fresh, and has something to offer to the table. And the black tie, put its all together as being a classic but new look. He will wear a long black dress coat overtop everything to give him that business look and will tie it all together with a blue scarf to add color, and show he isn’t afraid of anything. Susan also says that he has a kind of politician demeanor about him when he talks. Politicians like to be taken seriously, and I find no better dress code than a suit and tie to be considered serious. George knows that someone has committed the murder, and all he wants to do is get to the bottom of the case. He believes that Mrs. Wright has done the deed, and has a very sarcastic tone when talking about her. He wonders if she killed her husband why she is worried about clothes and preserved fruits. He is slowly trying to understand the murder and figure out the motive and solve the case and this is why I want him in a suit. A suit isn’t only business, it’s an outfit that says I’m here for a reason, but the reason you’ll never find out.

Sheriff Henry Peters Henry will be in his Sheriff uniform, which consists of brown and black, with a small pop of gold and white. When I think about a sheriff in general, I think of the highway patrol. They have a dark uniform, with a shiny badge, and a big hat that kind of resembles a cowboy hat. Well this is exactly how I picture Sheriff Henry Peters. He has on a brown uniform, with a matching warm coat, with a lining of tan wool on the inside. He has a full beard on his face with some gray popping up. He wears his badge on the right side of his chest under his coat and wears a black belt and some black boots. Henry is one of those sheriffs that doesn’t want to believe what is happening around him. He follows Mr. Henderson around upstairs as they are looking for clues as to who did the murder. They come back downstairs after finding nothing, and they think it’s a little strange. After returning from going to the barn, he goes to round up his men. I feel like the Sheriff is just trying to be a good guy in the town, and he is a very humble person.

Mrs. Peters- Sheriff’s Wife
She is wearing a skirt to just below her knees, stockings, high-heels, a white long sleeved blouse, and a shoulder cape. Mrs. Peters is someone who is very proper. She is a sheriff’s wife- she has a lot to live up to. I wanted to dress her in a knee length skirt, blue, to show that she is sophisticated at all times. She is wearing stockings and high-heels to further prove that she has a quality about her. The white long sleeved shirt due to the weather. I wanted to keep her in simple colors because she is a simple woman. She will also have on a red lipstick to tie in her whole look. I give her red, because she is a sheriffs wife, meaning that she is with the law and with the United States, so the colors only see fit. She wears a shoulder cape, black, to show her elegance. During the scenes with her and Mrs. Hale, while they’re in the kitchen, you can tell that Mrs. Peter’s is a little flustered when talking about what her and Mrs. Hale think happened to Mrs. Wright, but she never really shows it. And I find that by putting her in a classic outfit like this is something that can display her without over doing it.

Farmer Lewis Hale Lewis is wearing the average everyday clothes you could see a farmer in. Lewis is just the neighbor. A quiet kind of man, who is genuinely a nice man. And when thinking of what to dress him in, I wanted him to be the classic kind of farmer. Jeans, a flannel plaid shirt, cowboy boots and a warm winter coat. I find that this outfit is fitting for him, because he’s a simple man. He is curious as to what is happening in his neighbors house, but he doesn’t stress over it too much.

Mrs. Hale- Farmer’s Wife
I see her wearing casual, comfortable clothes. Jeans and a t-shirt kind of lady with a bit of her own style Mrs. Hale is your typical country wife. I picture her wearing clothes that don’t stress her weight since she is a little on the large size, but clothes that make her comfortable at the same time. She is a very relaxed person, which I feel yellows and greens express. The green is the calming color of Mrs. Hale, while the yellow is a little more extreme when she tries to figure everything out with what had happened to Mr. Wright.

Mrs. Wright- Widow I see her in a house coat and maybe some slippers as she sits in her rocking chair. Before marrying Mr. Wright, Mrs. Wright use to sing all the time, and as Mrs. Hale recalls, she use to wear a white dress with a blue ribbon. But I through in some deep purple to express how she feels now that her husband is no longer with her. As she rocks in the rocking chair when Mr. Hale enters and asks about Mr. Wright, she seems like she is in a daze and doesn’t really know what she is doing in her kitchen and why she is just rocking back and forth.
