2 Tribe A group of families bound together under a single leadership

3 League An organization of people that unites people under a specific purpose. The Iroquois League was formed in order to bring a lasting peace

4 The Great Council A group of 50 representatives a few from each tribe made all of the decisions for the league. The older women of the tribe could add or take away representatives.

5 Cultural Region An area in which people with similar cultures live

6 Hunters and Farmers They hunted deer, bear, elk, and beaver for food and clothing. Lakes and rivers were used for water and fishing. The fields were used to grow corn, beans, and squash. Wood from the forest was used for housing

7 Permanent Home Longhouse Housed up to 12 families. There was a central fire pit for cooking meals. Half the size of a football field

8 Environment and Beliefs Iroquois like many other Native American groups were close to the environment and animals. They used the rivers for transportation They used the trees for their homes They grew corn and killed animals for their food They were governed by the Great Council Men were chosen to run the council Older women could kick them off of the council

9 Reservations There are about 50,000 Iroquois today living on reservations. A reservation is land set aside by the US for Native Americans Today the Great Council still meets
