BRAINSTEM the oldest part and central core of the brain, beginning where the spinal cord swells as it enters the skull responsible for automatic survival functions

Pons The pons is part of the rhombencephalon/the hindbrain. Pons forms together with medulla oblongata/ the medulla and mesencephalon/the midbrain the brain stem. The brain stem receives sensory information and conveys motor function from cranial nerves. It also serves as a conduit for information from ascending sensory and descending motor tracts. The pons participate in the regulation of eye movements. It gets blood supply from a.basilaris/the basilar artery. BRAINSTEM

Medulla (medulla Oblongata) Medulla [muh-DUL-uh] base of the brainstem controls heartbeat and breathing BRAINSTEM

Reticular formation Reticular Formation a nerve network in the brainstem that plays an important role in controlling arousal BRAINSTEM

Cerebellum Cerebellum [sehr-uh- BELL-um] the “little brain” attached to the rear of the brainstem it helps coordinate voluntary movement and balance BRAINSTEM

LIMBIC SYSTEM Limbic System a doughnut-shaped system of neural structures at the border of the brainstem and cerebral hemispheres associated with emotions such as fear and aggression and drives such as those for food and sex includes the hippocampus, amygdala, and hypothalamus.

Thalamus Thalamus [THAL-uh-muss] the brain’s sensory switchboard, located on top of the brainstem it directs messages to the sensory receiving areas in the cortex and transmits replies to the cerebellum and medulla LIMBIC SYSTEM

Ventricle The entire surface of central nervous system is bathed by a clear, colorless fluid called cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The CSF is contained within a system of fluid-filled cavities called ventricles. The ventricles are shown in blue on the following midsagittal section of the brain. The dense fluid protects the brain and spinal cord from shock; a brain that weighs 1,500 g in air weighs only 50 g when suspended in CSF (Livingston, 1965).air
