H ISTORICAL C ONTEXT Setting : Of Mice and Men takes place in the mid- 1930s during America’s Great Depression. During this time it was difficult to find work, only 25% of people had a job. Steinback wrote this book because he was concerned about the many people who had lost hope due to the time period the book was set in. Steinbeck said to find someone like George was very rare, George had a special kind of personality.

A UTHOR ’ S T ECHNIQUES Symbolism : The relationship between Candy and the dog represent the relationship between George. Allegory: Lennie’s rat and animal obsession. Simile: “Flies shot like rushing stars.” This represents the living conditions that Lennie and George had to deal with. Metaphor : "Godlike eyes fastened on to him.” This describes the way Slim looked at people even though he is not really a god.

P ERSONAL R EACTION I personally enjoyed the book, because it shows that during a dark time in American history people were able to find their way through a tough situation. The Great Depression was a hard time for America as a whole, but seeing an in depth experience of a specific situation is eye- opening.
