Observations Observations are made when we use our senses to gather information about the world around us. There are two types of observations.

Qualitative Qualitative observation (quality): A description usually based on our senses. Ex- Color, shape, feel, taste, sound. Examples: The dog is wearing a blue sweater. The dog is wearing a blue sweater. The dog has a wet nose. The dog has a wet nose. The dog’s fur is shiny. The dog’s fur is shiny.

Quantitative Quantitative observation (quantity) : A quantity based on exact measurement. Quantitative observation (quantity) : A quantity based on exact measurement.Examples: The room is 8 meters across. The room is 8 meters across. Sarah is 141 cm tall. Sarah is 141 cm tall. Sam weighs 450 Newtons. Sam weighs 450 Newtons.

Inferences Inference: A logical interpretation of an event that is based on observations and prior knowledge. Examples: The dog is warm. The dog is warm. The dog lives indoors. The dog lives indoors. The dog likes to sleep The dog likes to sleep with blankets.

Making Inferences Scenario: You are at the counter in the office. You make an observation of a student leaving the principal’s office crying and upset.
