Quality Working Group Scope and Objectives Proba-V QWG#2, ESRIN, 28-29/10/2015 The QWG is a team of scientists, experts and key users who work as a collective in order to ensure and maintain the highest products quality throughout the mission lifetime The main objectives of the QWG are: Review and assess mission end-to-end performances (flight and ground segment) Provide recommendations to the Mission Manager for improvements on algorithm and products quality, and Cal/Val methods Drive corrective actions in case of anomalies or degradation, or propose optimizations to current operations Develop and maintain a scientific agenda and carry out (together with supporting scientists) the relevant work, which is needed to ensure the highest product quality Support Cal/Val and mission science exploitation activities Drive (as a collective) the algorithm improvement cycle

Review of QWG AI status (1/3) Proba-V QWG#2, ESRIN, 28-29/10/2015 IDActionResponsibleDue dateStatus A1.1Wouter Dierckx to investigate behavior SWIR pixel vs dark current. VITO (WD)Next QWGClosed: investigation performed by WD. Additional details in VITO Report on QWG#1 Actions. A1.2Wouter Dierckx (linked to A1.1) : Monitor the SWIR band pixel stability. VNIR radiometric stability. VITO (WD)Next QWGUpdates to be presented by VITO A1.3VITO - check the data limit for download. VITO (DC)Next QWGClosed: Data download limit is set to 500GB (FTP space) for regular users. The Copernicus Global Land Service data limit was set to 2TB in 2014 upon request. A1.4Data extraction L1C over ROI would be useful. VITO to Check the feasibility. VITO (DC)30/6/2015Closed: A Tool to extract ROIs from L1C is already existing in the actual Processing workflow. This tool can be made available to users or integrated in S3 TB. In the PDF, there is no option to extract ROIs from L1C data. Only S1 and S10 products are supported. To be discussed at QWG (during VITO presentation). A1.5VITO supported by Marc Bouvet (ESA): What is the impact of the calibration on downstream products ? on TOC products ? VITO + ESA (MB) Next QWGUpdates to be presented by VITO A1.6ESA: Check the feasibility (cost, effort and technical) to provide a correction for the early part of the mission (on geometric issue). ESA15/7/2015Closed: VITO provided the estimated effort, the effort is huge since a daily calibration factor should be generated to correct a-posteriori for the in-flight anomaly. During Joint Proba-V Board Meeting#4 (Sep 2015) it was agreed not to proceed with the re-processing.

Review of QWG AI status (2/3) Proba-V QWG#2, ESRIN, 28-29/10/2015 IDActionResponsibleDue dateStatus A1.7Pierre Defourny to define when and where to start acquisition and VITO / ESA : Study the feasibility and impact. PD + VITO/ESA PD + VITO/ESA (01/09/2015) Closed: Requirements provided by PD to extend Northern Hemisphere coverage during winter time in order to do snow monitoring, similar to what is currently done for S2. A test will be performed in the coming weeks for the whole 2015/16 winter. UCL will present first results on assessment early at the Proba-V Symposium. A1.8VITO: Check the issue on the Yemen image 20131127 and 20140629 (stripe and cloud). VITO (WD)31/5/2015Closed: The issue has been found on the S1 TOC products. The stripes shown are bright stripes in Left camera, SWIR1 sensor. Additional details in VITO Report on QWG#1 Actions. A1.9VITO: Provide uncertainty budget for Proba-V standard products. VITO (WD)Update at next QWG Updates to be presented by VITO A1.10VITO - check the grids for 1km and 300 m products. VITO (DC)15/6/2015Closed: VITO clarified the issue, see the VITO report on QWG#1 Actions. This clarification was added in the Proba-V Product User Manual (PUM v1.3). A1.11For L1C, Consultation with the QWG will be organised to integrate the Proba-v requirements, also adding Proba-v specifics functions. CB/FN to collect requirements. CB: define user test case for the L1C integration in the toolbox. CB + ESA (FN)15/7/2015VITO provided the requirements, feedback from CB is expected, in particular required effort and schedule for implementation. Updates to be presented by CB. A1.12CB - Include PROBA-V in PixBox.CBUpdate at next QWG Updates to be presented by CB. A1.13VITO Provide the report to QWG before any implementation (on cloud masking improvement). VITO15/7/2015Closed: Report provided by VITO and sent to QWG.

Proba-V QWG#2, ESRIN, 28-29/10/2015 Review of QWG AI status (3/3) IDActionResponsibl e Due dateStatus A1.14Check if we (ESA / BELSPO) can organise a “contest” for the best algorithm based on reference data. This is mid-term action. ESA + BELSPO Update at next QWG ESA is setting up a specific contract within the IDEAS+ framework in order to address this action. A1.15Roselyne Lacaze, Else Swinnen: Provide feedback on S3 VGT algorithm for compositing. VITO (ES) + RL 30/6/2015Closed: Currently, for the generation of the VGS products, the maximum NDVI of the 300m VGK is selected in space and time. This will lead to major inconsistencies with VGT, because this is a subsampling of the information, not a resampling. This should be changed, i.e. first a spatial resampling from 300m to 1km of VGK, secondly a selection of the max NDVI over time. This feedback was provided to ACRI for implementation in S3 VGT algorithm. A1.16PG/FN: Draft the QWG recommendation by 11/05/2015. QWG: Review and comments by mid-May. ESA (PG/FN) + ALL 1/6/2015Closed: Draft provided to the QWG for review, feedback received from Users: PD, RL, CB, CA. Final report sent to Mission Manager. A1.17(Clarijs D., Francois M., Karim M.): Assess 2 possible causes which have quite an impact on the production: - Decompression error when unpacking raw data (possible spacecraft issue) - Missing spectral band data (most likely also due to compression problems on board of spacecraft) VITO (DC) + ESA (MF/KM) 30/6/2015Closed: An analysis was performed on the missing data of the daily PROBA-V synthesis products. See details in the VITO report on AI. To limit the amount of data that is discarded due to an error in the decompression, a processor change was implemented at VITO, which reduce significantly impact on data availability. To find the source of the bad (corrupt) data, an investigation on the platform side is required to avoid the corruption of data in the future and be the source of the above described events. (see M. Francois and VITO presentations)
