Types of CDs and CD Drives  CD-ROM  CD-R  CD-RW  Music CD  Capacities  Multisession drives

CD-ROM Drive CD-ROM is an acronym for Compact Disk–Read Only Memory. It is a pre-pressed compact disc that contains data accessible to, but not writable by, a computer for data storage and music playback.

But wait! There’s something cool about the CD-ROM Drive! If you put a paperclip into the little hole, below the CD tray. You can manually eject the tray without using any force, electricity or power! It’s like magic! This is one of the many fun things you learn in Mr. Rodriguez’s A+ class!

1. CD-R 2. CD-RW 3. Music CD CD Discs Types: There are many different types of CD discs. Among those, are:

CD-R CD-R is an acronym for Compact Disc-Recordable. CD-R is a variation of the Compact Disc, invented by Phillips and Sony. The Capacity of a CD-R - Most CD-Rs on the market have an 80 minute capacity, there are also 90 minute and 99 minute discs, although they are less common.

CD-RW The Capacity of a CD-RW - Most CD-RWs on the market either have an 650 or 750 MB capacity. A CD-RW disc has been said to write and erase up to 1000 times! CD-RW is an acronym for Compact Disc-Re Writable. CD- RW is an rewritable optical disc format & was introduced in 1997.

Music CD  An MP3 CD is a compact disc (usually a CD-R or CD-RW) that contains digital audio in the MP3 file format.  Because of audio data compression, an MP3 CD does not have to spin all of the time, thereby saving battery power. The song is buffered in random-access memory, which also provides protection against skipping. The Capacity of a Music CD - A standard audio CD (74 Minutes) can hold about 18 songs.

Multi-Session Drives Formats have versions that use single sessions or multiple sessions. Some newer CD formats use more than one session, and are called multi-session drives. Using multiple sessions means that information can be written to the first part of the disk, and then later more information can be appended to it in the unused space left after the first session.

See, Computer Science isn’t so bad! It’s not all about hard work and home works! You learn cool and amazing tricks in Mr. Rodriguez’s A+ class. You learn something new everyday!
