Diving Officers Conference 2005 Update on Child and Vulnerable Adult Policies Iona Anthony

Update on Child Protection Where we were last year…… Introduction of Policies Start of Registration Process with CRBS (to allow free checks for instructors)

Update on Child Protection Where we are now…… Registration with CRBS complete BUT……. A few problems to iron out

ID checks  Requirement for signatory to see originals of passport / drivers licence + 2 recent bills  Not practical for one person to be available to check all instructors  Addition of new signatories ONLY to do ID checks

Protection of Children (Scotland) Act  Act came into force January 2005  Certain parts postponed until April 2005 to give voluntary organisations more time  As of APRIL statute states that anyone in a position of responsibility / authority over children or vulnerable adults must be Disclosure checked.  If we in SSAC do not fulfil the above mentioned we will be subject to prosecution.

Impact on SSAC organisation  ALL regional coaches will have to be Disclosure checked before reappointment after the AGM  As of the next BI / RI course, Disclosure checks will be COMPULSARY for all  Because of the need to verify ID, checks will need to take place on the courses

Branches  A number of branches have already requested checks for their instructors  This is often due to local authority restrictions on the hire of pools (particularly school pools).  Any Branch requiring checks should make contact with myself through HQ.  I will arrange for someone to visit the branch with appropriate forms and carry out ID checks

Questions  Questions which have arisen this year: If we chose not to have child members, would we still need to appoint a CVA officer and implement the SSAC CVA Policies. If we want all of our instructors to be checked, how would we enforce this. As a Regional Coach I don’t want to do a disclosure check. What implications does this have? I was checked as a BI, do I need to be rechecked when I do my RI? I was checked as a BI, but my SSAC membership lapsed. Do I need to be rechecked? As Regional Instructors and Examiners cross-branch train, should they not all be Disclosure checked?

Any other questions?
