Definitions Electronic Health Record (EHR) Sometimes Sometimes referred to as Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) – Computerized – Computerized version of health-related information on an individual Includes Includes patient demographic, administrative data and clinical health information, such as medical history, medications, immunizations, lab data, radiology reports and problem lists

BENEFITS OF ELECTRONIC HEALTH INFORMATION Statewide health information exchange went live on July 1, 2012 – Electronic health information will be exchanged through the certified HIOs (KHIN and LACIE) – Health Information Exchanges require that patient records be kept in Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems in order to be exchanged Key Ongoing Health IT Efforts: Kansas

BENEFITS OF ELECTRONIC HEALTH INFORMATION HIT Regional Extension Center (REC) Established through the ARRA HITECH act In Kansas, the Kansas Foundation for Medical Care (KFMC) is the HIT REC for the state (http://www.kfmc.org/rec/) – Works with providers in Kansas to speed up the adoption of Electronic Health Records and meaningful use of certified EHR technology – In addition to the larger urban areas, over 1,450 medical providers in small practices and 95 hospitals in rural areas have committed to implement EHR systems. Thus Kansas providers are now positioned to take advantage of the health information exchanges. Key Ongoing Health IT Efforts: Kansas
