“Trinity”—the Two Series
2
Two Series—2 players on one side and 5 on the opposite side of the 8m. The location tells where the 2 players will start with the ball Trinity X—the ball and 2 players are at X Trinity R—the ball and 2 players are on the right Trinity L—the ball and 2 players are on the left Trinity M—2 players are in the middle
3
“Trinity X” (2X) Formation: 2 players at 3 and 4; 5 players at High L and Y Formation Possibilities for the “2 person game” (at 3 and 4): crease roll, “throw back; cut through,” “throw back; screen and drive,” “throw back; screen and roll with a dump,” and “opposite pipe”2 person game Players at the High L and Y cut and screen for one another. Cuts to the crease use the upper portion of the 8m allowing the 2 players behind room to operate. – Work to time cuts and keep the 8 open. – Caution: midfielders make sure that we have one player at High Y to guard against the fast break, and the attack is responsible to “back up” the play (someone behind the goal).

“Trinity L” (2L) Formation: 2 players at E; 2, 4, and 3 players at O Formation – It’s key that the player at 2 stays on the opposite side of the crease—or else she’ll bring her defender over to the “2 side.” Possibilities for the “2 person game” (at E) – Draw and dump – Feed opposite side cutters Players at E cut and screen for one another. Cuts to the crease use their half of the 8m allowing the 2 players at E room to operate. Time cuts and keep the 8m open. Players at 2 and 4: these players may get involved in the cuts and screen, but need to make sure we have one player at High Y to guard against the fast break and one “backing up” the play (someone behind the goal).

“Trinity R” (2R) Formation: 2 players at O; 1, 3, and 3 players at E – It’s key that the player at 1 stays on the opposite side of the crease—or else she’ll bring her defender over to the “2 side.” Possibilities for the “2 person game” (at O) – Draw and dump – Feed opposite side cutters Players at E cut and screen for one another. Cuts to the crease use their half of the 8m allowing the 2 players at O room to operate. Time cuts and keep the 8m open. Players at 1 and 3: these players may get involved in the cuts and screen, but need to make sure we have one player at High Y to guard against the fast break and one “backing up” the play (someone behind the goal).

“Trinity M” (2M) Formation: 2 players at L; X, O, E, 1, and 2 Formation Players at L – Screen for one another; post up: move, pivot, and seal off. – Choke up on sticks. – Call name of player where they want the feed to come from. – Timing is everything on everything (cuts, screens and rotation of ball) Perimeter players: – Catch and look inside; if it’s not there, pass immediately. It’s imperative to keep the ball moving, so the defense cannot rest. – After 20-30 seconds, “one in, one out”=exchange a post player for one on perimeter; post player screens for the perimeter player. Emphasis: the ball MUST move on the perimeter before finding player in the middle.

Necessary Skills for “Trinity Series” Teach Post Up: Get an inside step on your defender by faking a cut- through, stop abruptly and pin her on your back (box her out). Another way of doing this is to fake a pick on the ball. If your defender thinks you’re setting a pick, she’s more likely to give you space and stay on your back. From there you can back her in and show for the ball—calling for the pass between your shoulders. – Note: Apply this technique to other locations on the field, i.e. getting open on a clear. Teach Pivoting: On the catch, pivot on your inside or outside foot, and square up to goal before shooting. Technique: jump stop—low landing, knees bent, low pivot “outside” (right foot); pivot running—run out, catch ball, jump stop, pivot outside, run, pivot inside (left foot). Drill: right— inside and outside; left—inside and outside. "Trinity M" Feed Drill: Ball starts at 1, moves to 2; moves to 4, to 3-- meanwhile 2 players at L picks for one another; feed comes from 3.
