Aaron Seder “Geometry in Sports” 4th Hour

Basketball Basketball uses perpendicular lines to create sidelines, since a basketball court has 90 degree angles. Parallel lines are used for the free throw line, half-court line, and the sidelines to keep the court a rectangle.

Soccer Perpendicular lines are used to make the sidelines with 90 degree angles and for the goal box, since it too has 90 degree angles. Parallel lines are used for the goal box, half-court line, and sidelines, so that they are pointing the same direction.

Tennis In this sport, perpendicular lines are used to create sidelines and the net, since they form 90 degree angles with each other. Parallel lines are used to form serving lines, so the server has an even rectangle to serve from and into, not to mention the net, so that it is straight across the court.

Bowling Parallel lines are used for the gutters, so the bowler knows that there is a definite area to roll the ball in, otherwise the ball won’t knock down any pins. A bowler also wants to direct the bowling ball in a parallel line to the gutters, down the middle, so as to hit the pins in the middle and knock down as many as possible.

Football Perpendicular lines are used for the sidelines, the goal post, and the end zone, which all have 90 degree angles, so that they are measurable and equal on both sides of the field with the least hassle. Parallel lines, in this game, are used for the lines that mark distance on the field, the field goal, (so the bottom bar is flat and parallel to the ground,) and for 1st downs, since it is the only way to measure accurately if the distance is correct.

Soccer If parallel and perpendicular lines were taken out of Soccer, the game wouldn’t be too different. The field would have to be shaped like a circle to make it a regular shape. The ball could start in the middle of the field still. There would just be a smaller circle in the middle with two bisecting lines to make sure the ball is in the middle, since the intersection of these lines is the middle of the circle.

Soccer The Goal box would just be a half circle, as would the goal post. Soccer would be basically the same as it was before.

Soccer In this game, the strategy would be the same, only one would have to be wary of curved lines to stay inside of instead of straight ones. I think it would be more fun to play, since the field is round, so it would be different, and players could play in a dome if they wanted. A dome would be fun to watch indoor soccer in and to play in, since the ball would ricochet at unpredictable angles.

Soccer I think it would be about the same as a game, my positive reasons are that it could have a dome possibility, it would be like no other game, and it would have better technique necessities for scoring a goal in a half-circle goal. The negative would be the irregular shapes, no good way to determine an “average size”, and would be difficult to make a practical way to seat spectators.
