Module 2 “A night on the town ” Unit 3

Warming-up Activity : What can we do in Lijiang? Your grandparents just came to Lijiang to see you. They have never been in Lijiang before, and so you want to show them around on the coming weekend. You are now discussing with them as to where they can visit in the two days. The following expressions might be useful in your discussion: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain The Old Town of Lijiang (The Old Town of Shuhe) Black Dragon Pool Park Tiger Leaping Gorge Lion Hill (Elephant Hill) Note: The discussion can be carried out in groups of three, each playing a role. A couple of groups may be chosen to report their decision after the discussion.

Section B  1. Listen to the conversation in which three friends are deciding what they want to do that evening and then they arrange where to go. Listen to the tape with your textbooks closed for the first time and describe briefly what you have learned about their plan.

Sections B  2. Listen to the tape again and fill in the table on p22.  3. Read the conversation after the tape and then in groups of three.  4. Read and recite the expressions on the following page.

Expressions for Memorization (1)  Expressions to show preferences:  I’m looking forward to…  I feel like doing something lively and exciting.  I’m not in the mood for…  That sounds good/fine.  Good idea.  That’s fine by me.  That’s just what I feel like doing.  That suits me.  Actually, I’d rather…  Asking for other people’s preferences:  What about you, Tom?  What would you like to do?  Where would you like to go?  Shall we go…  How about going…  What about going…  Do you fancy…  Maybe we could…  Let’s try…  Why don’t we…  We could…

Expressions for Memorization (2)  Expressions to ask if everybody agrees / to show everybody agrees:  OK, is everybody happy with that then?  So, are we all agreed?  OK, that’s settled then.  So, we all agree that…

Practice activity A  Now, use appropriate expressions to complete the conversation on p 23 on your own first, then compare your answer with your desk mate. Finally, the teacher will check your answer (5 min.)  Arranging to meet  Listen to the conversation on the tape and make notes of the missing words in the box. Memorize the expressions listed out for you on the following page.

Expressions for Memorization (3)  Where and when should we meet?  We’d better get there a bit early.  Why don’t we meet at…(time/place)?  Can we make it (a bit) later?  I’ll meet you…(place)  What time’s good for you?  How does (time/place) sound?  Would (time/place) be OK for you?  What time would suit you?  What kind of place do you have in mind?  We could perhaps meet sometime after…(time)  Suppose we meet at…(place)  What is the best time for you?  We need to get there by…(time)  That will give us (plenty of) time to…  I don’t think I can make it by…(time)

Revision Activity (Pyramid Building)  The National Day vocation is coming. You need to decide on a plan for the “Golden Week”. Discuss it over in pairs first to make a decision between you two, then each pair joins another pair to reach a common decision. After that, four pairs meet together to find a common ground. When this is finished, each group of 8 people should choose a representative to give a report. Remember to use the sentences and expressions you have learned in this unit. (This can be done at the Noon Chat)

Some possible options

Practice activity B, C and Section D  These parts can be handed to “student teachers” to cope with at the EANLIC Night.  Some suggestion for “student teachers ”:  1. Think of good ways to check students’ memorization for the expressions listed out for you during the class time.  2. Culture corner in Section D is designed to enhance students’ awareness of cultural differences in different cultures. In this “Culture corner”, you should obviously point out the appropriate ways for us to agree or disagree Westerners in English on the basis of comparing different cultures. “The dinner invitation ” in “Participation activity ” can be an interesting discussion if the students understand what it is about, so ask them to read the part carefully before the EANLIC Night.
