2 The Five Themes of Geography: 1.Location- where is this place? Absolute Location- a place’s exact location on Earth Use latitude and longitude to determine absolute location

3 The Five Themes: Location continued Latitude- lines that go around the Earth in an east-west direction above and below the Equator the Equator is 0º latitude Longitude- lines that run in a north- south direction and meet at the poles the Prime Meridian is 0º longitude Example- Reno is located at 39.5ºN latitude, 119.8ºW longitude

4 The Five Themes: Location Continued Relative Location- a place’s location in relation to other places Example- Nevada is east of California

5 The Five Themes: Place 2.Place- the unique physical and human characteristics of an area The people, plants, animals, weather, and history of a place make it unique

6 The Five Themes: Human-Environment Interaction 3.Human-Environment Interaction- the way the Earth appears as a result of how humans have changed it; how humans adapt to the environment Example- much of Reno’s sagebrush has been cleared to build houses, businesses, and schools

7 The Five Themes: Movement 4.Movement- the way people, goods, and ideas travel from place to place Example- people and goods can move by planes, trains, and automobiles; ideas can move through TV, the internet, telephone, etc.

8 The Five Themes: Region 5.Region- areas of the world that have common characteristics The commonalities could be political, cultural, climate, etc. Example- like other deserts, the Nevada desert is dry and hot during the summer Example- the United States is a political region with one government

9 Reflection: On the left hand side of your paper, “recall” the information you’ve been given by writing key words or phrases to remember, writing questions you may have, and/or drawing symbols or pictures, etc. On the bottom of your paper, “summarize” the information that you learned about the Five Themes of Geography
