3 File Naming Protocol class-filename-username

4 Open My Documents and make a new folder Label this folder: Schoolwork-username

5 Create folders in the Schoolwork folder Open your Schoolwork folder and make folders for all your classes.

6 Details view for folders What information in details view could help you when looking for files?

7 Making Details show for all folders You have made your folders show in details. Now go to Tools Menu and choose Folder Options.

10 Making a Desktop Shortcut A shortcut is a very small file that will “shortcut” you to programs, applications, files and folders. You should use them for things you access often. They can be on your desktop

11 Make a Shortcut to Schoolwork folder on your Desktop Open My Documents. Right Click on your schoolwork folder. Choose Send To Desktop (create shortcut) 1. 2.3. Are there other ways to make shortcuts?

13 Why you should not save files on your desktop? NOT a good way to organize files (just like your desk “top” at home) Large amounts of data on the desktop will slow your computer down Possibility of deleting files without knowing Backing up is more difficult

14 File Naming Protocol The files students put in their schoolwork folder should have the following naming protocol: class–filename–username Example: LA9–FamilyEssay–hunterc File names will be given by teachers. Files are filed in appropriate places (no stray files)
