Schools Science Project European Environment Agency To be piloted in Sweden

CLIMATE CHANGE SCIENCE PROJECT FOR TEAMS OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS 1 Examine critically the evidence for Climate Change 2 Assess whether it is a real phenomenon 3 Decide if human activity is a factor 4 Suggest possible actions for the human race take.

1 Start by outlining what sort of evidence would be useful to draw any conclusions 2 Assemble as much evidence as possible “For and Against”. A disinterested attitude to assembling data is a fundamental prerequisite and an ethical issue 3 Include as much unexpected evidence as possible not previously considered and possibly add local studies 4 Assess the reliability of all the data accumulated - error estimates 5 Discuss, argue, and try to draw some reliable conclusions 6 Assess the degree of certainty of the conclusions 7 Summarise the project and conclusions 8 Create a modern “21 st Century Report “ a dual video/data GEOSET recording 9 Disseminate on the Internet – all project streaming

© Glacier 1977 The same Glacier 2006 The data Rafael found showed that in the last 100 years 90% of all glaciers have receded - a lot Schools Climate Change Project School in Chihuahua - Mexico

Much easier to assess and more enjoyable too

1.The teams are to assemble as much data as possible, 2.Use scientific analytical methods to asses the reliability of the data, 3.Contribute some further information based on their own investigations preferably involving local studies 4.Summarise, as a team, their findings 5.Present the findings in a GEOSET video to be streamed on the Web 6.Prizes to be awarded to the teams presenting the most scientifically based conclusions

Initial Example Suggestions Here are one or two suggested areas where observations that might bear on the overall proof or falsification of whether Climate Change is occurring: Are the annual average temperatures rising? Are more glaciers receding than advancing? Is the sea level rising in general? Is the amount of CO 2 in the atmosphere increasing?

Preliminary Research Strategy Outline 1.The aim is for each group to decide for themselves on the basis of the evidence whether Climate Change is real and whether Man’s activities are responsible. However the teams must be careful as there are information sources with a vested interest in the outcome and intent disseminating misleading information to lead people astray. Start by outlining the project strategy: 2.Assemble as much evidence as possible “For and against”. Such as Sea Level rise (Fig 10) and Average Global Temperatures (Fig 11). A disinterested attitude to assembling data is a fundamental prerequisite for an ethical issue. 3.It is vital that all unexpected evidence, previously not considered must be included. 4.Assess the reliability of the evidence accumulated - error estimates 5.Individual members of the groups should undertake the assembly of evidence of a given kind and make a preliminary assessment. 6.Discuss all the observations, assessments arguments carefully and come to a team conclusion. 7.As well as exploring the information already assembled in the literature teams might try to think of and prosecute one or more original projects of their own which might contribute useful information. 8.Teams should carefully assess the degree of certainty of their conclusions.

Global Citizenship Project A Science project for teams of school children (say 5 per team?) to study whether there is any reliable evidence for climate change using scientific methodology and publish by recording Internet using the GEOSET approach
