3 General comments on KS1 students’ weaknesses in English (TSA Report 2007)

4 Reading Students were less capable of identifying key words in longer texts, eg. stories. They had difficulty in identifying main ideas in certain text types, eg. advertisement and stories.

5 Reading Students were weak in making inferences in longer texts such as stories and diaries when they were required to infer implicit meaning from a few sentences. They were weak in interpreting reference words. They had difficulties in identifying what ‘we’ and ‘them’ referred to in longer texts (eg. stories and diary entries).
