Consumer Goods Automobiles, washing machines, clothes dryers, vacuum cleaners, televisions TV changed the way people learned about the world around them-news and events all over the world came into living rooms Vaccine-Jonas Salk developed vaccine to prevent polio-a crippling disease

Lesson 2 Civil Rights Civil rights are rights that a country guarantees their citizens Slavery ended but African Americans were still treated unequally

School Segregation Ends Schools were segregated in the fifties until Linda Brown in Kansas sued the Board of Education in a court of law. Thurgood Marshall took the case to the Supreme Court where segregation was ruled illegal/unconstitutional Brown vs. Board of Ed

Montgomery Bus Boycott Buses were segregated in Montgomery during the fifties Rosa Parks Nonviolent protest led by MLK Jr Supreme Court ruled segregated buses illegal/unconstitutional

March on Washington Protest in DC Famous “I Have a Dream” speech Civil Rights Act of 1964-banned segregation in schools, workplaces, and public places such as restaurants and theaters Law didn’t pass due to Americans voting- African Americans could not vote

Voting Rights Act of 1965 It was illegal to prevent or hinder citizens from voting because of their racial or ethnic backgrounds. 1968 MLK was assassinated Other minority groups were inspired and fought for their rights also

Lesson 3 Sixties JFK had New Frontier programs for young people to help change society Started the Peace Corps-sent volunteers to teach all around the world “…ask not what your country can do for you-ask what you can do for your country”

Lesson 4 War in Vietnam Group of communist supported by the North Vietnamese government tried to overthrow the South Vietnam government in the early 60’s. U.S. sent advisors 1 st and ended up sending soldiers by 1965. Vietcong joined in fighting against the U.S.

Johnson sent more U.S. soldiers New U.S. technology: tanks and bombers, helicopters Vietcong fought in small groups in the jungle with out new weapons Vietcong controlled most of South Vietnam despite the number of soldiers and new weapons

Leaving Vietnam Nixon became President in 1969 He brought a lot of soldiers home immediately as planes increased bombing N Vietnam 1973 Cease fire between North Vietnam and U.S. and South Vietnam All U.S. soldiers left Vietnam North Vietnam attacked again and won

Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Made in DC in 1982 Built to recognize the contributions of veterans who had fought in Vietnam Designer: Maya Lin Maya was 21 and designed it in hopes to help people heal after the war Names of all U.S. soldiers that died in Vietnam are engraved into the black wall
