5 BUT BEFORE THE DOJ… A LERTING FACULTY TO THE NEED FOR ALTERNATE FORMAT FOR THEIR STUDENTS P ROVIDING THE RESOURCES FOR MAKING DOCUMENTS ACCESSIBLE R EMINDING THEM THAT THEY CAN DO IT TOO.

6 FACULTY CONCERNS I DON ’ T THINK I SHOULD HAVE TO, IT IS JUST ONE STUDENT S OMEONE ELSE ON CAMPUS SHOULD BE DOING THIS, NOT ME (DSS, IT, CFTL) M Y MATERIALS ARE ALREADY ACCESSIBLE. W HY WON ’ T YOU TELL ME THE NAME OF THE STUDENT ? W HY WON ’ T YOU TELL ME WHAT THEIR DISABILITY IS ? W HAT ABOUT MY COPYRIGHTS ?

7 A SECOND SIMPLE TRUTH CIVIL RIGHTS TRUMP COPYRIGHTS, EVERY SINGLE TIME.

8 SO HOW DO WE SPREAD THE GOSPEL? F ACULTY INFORMATION SESSIONS O FFERED THE WEEK BEFORE CLASSES BEGIN T ARGETED TO SPECIFIC FACULTY – THOSE THAT HAVE A STUDENT WITH A PRINT DISABILITY REGISTERED FOR THEIR COURSE P ROVIDES DO - IT - YOURSELF RESOURCES, AS WELL AS PUTTING A FACE TO THE PROCESS T RAININGS AND OUTREACH FROM CAMPUS COMMUNICATIONS O N - CAMPUS RESOURCES FOR CREATING ACCESSIBLE CONTENT

9 CONVERTS C ONVERTS SPREAD THE NEWS TO OTHERS C ONVERTS ALSO GET THEIR TA’ S INVOLVED C ONVERTS CONTINUE TO DEMONSTRATE BEST PRACTICES AND A RELAXED ATTITUDE ABOUT DOING SO.

11 MORE STATISTICS T HE MAJORITY OF FACULTY THAT ATTENDED, WHEN SURVEYED LATER, WERE APPRECIATIVE OF BEING GIVEN THE INFORMATION M OST NOTED THAT KNOWING MORE ABOUT THE STUDENT WAS THE MOST HELPFUL. S TUDENTS WHO DIDN ’ T PRESENT AFTER THE FACULTY MADE ALL THE RIGHT MOVES TO MAKE THEIR CONTENT ACCESSIBLE WERE THE BIGGEST FRUSTRATION

12 WHAT IS COVERED IN OUR FACULTY INFORMATION SESSIONS A N OVERVIEW OF THE NEW CAMPUS POLICY ON ACCESSIBLE DOCUMENTS A N OVERVIEW OF THE TYPES OF ALTERNATE FORMAT PRODUCED BY THE AFPAC – ACCESSIBLE ELECTRONIC DOCUMENTS, B RAILLE, AND TACTILE GRAPHICS A N OVERVIEW OF THE ALTERNATE FORMAT PROCESS IN THE AFPAC A SSURING THEM THAT WE HANDLE THE TEXTBOOKS UP FRONT WITHOUT NEEDING THEIR INPUT, AS LONG AS THEIR BOOK IS LISTED WITH THE BOOKSTORE. G IVING BASIC TIMELINES FOR PRODUCTION, SO THAT FACULTY WHO NEED OUR SERVICES KNOW WHEN TO SUBMIT MATERIALS FOR REMEDIATION H OW THEY CAN CREATE ACCESSIBLE FORMAT ON THEIR OWN R ESOURCES ON CAMPUS FOR CREATING ACCESSIBLE FORMAT (COMPASS SELF - SERVICE PORTAL FOR CREATING ACCESSIBLE DOCUMENTS, SOON - TO - BE - ADDED S ENSUS A CCESS, AND THE AFPAC)

13 OUR BIGGEST GOALS WITH FACULTY INFORMATION SESSIONS P UT A FACE TO THE NAME – I. E., FACULTY WHO DEVELOP A MORE PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH THE AFPAC AND THE A LTERNATE F ORMAT A CCESS C OORDINATOR ARE MORE LIKELY TO STAY AHEAD OF THE CURVE WHEN IT COMES TO ACCOMMODATING THEIR STUDENT WITH A PRINT DISABILITY. C ONVINCING THEM THAT THEY CAN DO THIS TOO. I T IS NOT MAGIC. H ELPING THEM TO THINK ABOUT ACCESSIBILITY FIRST, RATHER THAN AS AN AFTER - THOUGHT. O FFERING TRAINING, ONLINE TUTORIALS, AND OTHER RESOURCES TO HELP THEM CREATE THEIR OWN ACCESSIBLE CONTENT.

14 STILL PREACHING F ACULTY REACH IS STILL LIMITED – THE SESSIONS ARE NOT MANDATORY A DJUNCT FACULTY IS SOMEWHAT OF A REVOLVING DOOR – A NEWLY TRAINED ADJUNCT MAY MOVE ON TO OTHER EMPLOYMENT AFTER A SEMESTER OR TWO AND A NEW ADJUNCT WILL TAKE THEIR PLACE N EW FACULTY HIRES N EW TA HIRES
