2 The Earliest Atmosphere Earth lost the gases hydrogen, and helium due to the suns radiation. Earth has no atmosphere at this point. The first atmosphere was formed by outgassing from the interior earth. This process of outgassing still goes on today through volcanoes.

3 In-Depth Analysis Extreme volcanism happened during this time when differentiation occurred. Differentiation took place when heating and fluid-like motion in the mantle occurs. It is believed that the main portion of the atmosphere was from degassing in the early stages of Earth.

5 Other Notes Hot spots are volcanic regions a few hundred kilometers across. These spots are where main portions of outgassing occurs. In the volcanoes, vents, which are linked to the magma chamber release the lava, water vapor and other gases such as sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide and hydrogen.
