EQ: What were the motivating factors that caused explorers and colonists to come to the Americas? What led to Europeans beginning to travel around the world and explore? Monarchs such as Queen Isabella of Spain wanted to spread her version of Catholicism throughout the world Religious fervor sparked by the Reformation influenced this desire Religious Freedom: Groups would also look to the New World as an opportunity to practice religion the way they wanted. Gold Spanish Conquistadors found extremely wealthy civilizations literally packed with gold that sparked a sort of gold rush Monarchs needed gold to pay their armies to maintain power European powers found another source of wealth from the growth of sugar cane and the rise of sugar plantations Start of mercantilism Sparked the African Slave Trade

Glory Some were just sparked on by the idea of fame, the fame of exploration as described by the original voyages of Marco Polo Privateers raiding the Spanish Armada both in European waters as well as in the Americas Influence men like Sir Walter Raleigh to establish the Roanoke expedition sponsored by Queen Elizabeth the “virgin queen”

Push – Pull Affect Basically means that factors exist in the Old World literally pushing people out and at same time factors exist in the New World pulling people towards it. Land Scarcity Famine Religious Persecution Primogenitor: oldest son gets everything

Mercantilism an economic system used to increase the wealth and power of the “mother” country.
Developed during decay of feudalism Create and Maintain wealth by imbalance of trade with new territory Get resources from New World – Colonies Manufacture finished goods back home- Old World (Europe) Sell back to New World - Colonies

America Second attempt known as The Lost Colony of Roanoke 1663 Charter of Carolina – issued by King Charles II Issued rights to rule colony to 8 Lord Proprietors Proprietary vs. Royal vs. Charter Colony (What’s the difference?): Royal Colony: DIRECTLY ruled by a monarch (King) Charter Colony: right to self govern granted to colonists via a charter (contract) with the King (England) Proprietary Colony: power to govern granted by the King to specific people NC was Proprietary colony at first
