Redaction project was initiated by legislation (SB274) Protects against fraudulent use of birth and death records. Requires certified copies of birth and death certificates be issued from a central location. Establishes a fee structure to support system development

4 Strengthening Partnerships: Shaping the Future Portland, OR June 6 th – 10 th, 2004 Problems with images Confidential data is displayed Social Security Number Mother’s maiden name Signatures Removing this information from the images is expensive

5 Strengthening Partnerships: Shaping the Future Portland, OR June 6 th – 10 th, 2004 Solving the problem Create a centralized database, managed by the State Registrar's Office State Registrar staff remove confidential data from copies without affecting the integrity of the original document.

6 Strengthening Partnerships: Shaping the Future Portland, OR June 6 th – 10 th, 2004 Advantages The advantages of a centralized managed database are: Conversion of hard copy and microfiche Eliminates duplication of data Improved symmetry between the state index and the images Improved control for sealed and amended records
